Patriot Box Office 1080P High Definition Media Player
Price: $99.99 USD (Updated 11/10/2010)
This all-in-one media player offers some of the best functionality to hit the market to date. Like other digital media players, the Patriot Box Office HD, or Patriot Video Player is a streaming media player, but an added feature unlike most of the other players that are out on the market today is the ability to expand the internal storage capacity of the Box Office. So, as your media library continues to grow, the Patriot Box Office comes with an internal 2.5″ SATA hard drive slot that will work with any SSD/HDD. The Patriot Box Office HD media player does not come with an internal hard drive, but it is comforting to know if a person ever wanted to, a hard drive could be added. Some people may choose to only use it as streaming HD media player, and that is fine, but the Patriot Box Office Wireless G USB Adapter is also available on Amazon*. Another feature that jumps out is that this digital media player has lots of plugs and will work with any USB mass storage device. The Patriot Media Player comes with three USB 2.0 ports to accommodate more than one drive or peripheral. Also playable through the media player optical output or HDMI output, the Patriot Box Office includes Dolby® Digital and DTS™ surround sound processors providing 5.1 and 7.1 channel surround sound through your home entertainment system.
Here is an overview of the features:
- Includes HDMI 1.3 port, Supporting up to True HD 1080p
- Includes expandable hard drive slot for future expansion for extra storage of movies, photos, and music
- Universal Plug-n-Play capability (UPnP)

This little player works great. I had a little trouble connecting wifi to my computer because I did not have them as shared files, but that was finally remedied. The wireless picture is great, and sound works fine. The menu to get to the files is a little bulky, but this unit is awesome. It will work with older TV’s unlike the WD Live Media Player which is strictly 1080p. With the wireless unit free, and a $30 rebate, this is a great deal.
Again will it play VOB files ripped by RAELDVD software currentaly under litigation? I have several DVD files ripped by this sofware. However I lost the program downloaded and activated when it was offered last year
I do know that the WD Live is compatible with VOB files, but I don’t know how the player could distinguish from a VOB file from RealDVD or from a different program. If you already have the VOB files, you could try running through a different program like DVD shrink to make them compatible with other players than just RealDVD.
when i find a movie on my hard drive.I start the move and it appears in a little window on the right. how do i make it full screen
I think you are talking about the preview window, and I haven’t found a way to make the preview full screen. Go to Patriot Memory Forums, there is a good chance you can get an answer there.
Can I buy this MP at Frys Electronic or BestBuy?
or I have to buy online?
I haven’t seen this player out at Fry’s or Best Buy yet. I suspect that Amazon may have some sort of exclusive agreement with Patriot Memory.
Hey guys,
This may be a stupid question but I have to ask. Is it possible to have this Media player or any media player act like a server or be connected to a network in order for me to access everything that is on this device from my i.e. Netbook, 360, PS3 at the same time? The only way I see this possible is dedicating an old pc as the server and shareing the files. Is it possible with a Media player to do the same?
Any help would be appreciated. Thanks
Hi Lino,
I did find out that the Xtreamer supports a UpNP Gateway that will allow you to stream your HDD content through the internet. Here is the link to the article here on digital media player guide, Xtreamer, and here is the link to the product description at Amazon, Xtreamer 1080P HD Media Player & Network Streamer H.264 MKV
.
Here is the summary from the Xtreamer website:
Thanks Tripp,
Wow the Xtreamer looks pretty impressive. Just started reading up on it, I hope it will work with the 360. I love how it has Google Movie Jukebox. Thanks again
I have mixed feelings about this media player. I drop .MKV files on it and seems to play fine… then a few days later the .mkv files seem to get corrupted and can’t be played anymore.
Anyone else experiencing this ?
I also experience with mkv files, some would play just fine, and for some, I can preview it on the preview screen, but it won’t play when press the play button (or the enter button), all function completely frozen. I have to power down the unit and restart again. Anyone know what seems to be the problem? Does the resolution (480, 720, etc…) on the unit has to match up with the resolution recorded in the mkv file?
Goodmorning
awesome post – i’m creating video about it and i will post it to youtube !
if you wana to help or just need a link send me email !
I love this unit. Just got it on the weekend from Canada Computers and was impressed with how easy it is to use. I’ve got an external 2TB Phantom drive on it with around 1000 movies. I have a Sony HD video camera and found that the unprocessed Sony HD video also plays without a hitch. Fantastic video quality when plugged into the TV via the HDMI cable that came in with it. Highly recommend this unit. Now I’m just waiting for the 1TB 2.5″ drives to come down cheaper and I’ll plug one of those into it.
My main purpose for buying this unit was that we spend a lot of time on the road in hotels and wanted to havbe better quality movies to watch other than that which is .mp4 from my IPod.
Thanks Tripp,

Will it accept music stored in Mac format (whatever that is)?
Oh yeah, I meant the Patriot digital media player.
I could be mistaken, but I think what you are asking is if the Patriot media player will play music files that are stored on an Apple computer (Mac)? I believe iTunes and Apple computers store files in the .mp3 and mpeg-4 format. So if I am understanding your question, then, yes, the PBO will play music files from a Mac.
Im interested in the .mkv files… They dont play on my box. I only hear sound. But VLC on my computer playes the file just fine…
I double checked on the patriot website, and it states that the Patriot Media Player supports the .mkv file format. I would contact their customer service or check the forums to see if others are having similar problems. One quick solution might be to check the sound output setting on the Patriot. Sometimes these things are as easy as selecting the right sound output.
I have the Patriot Player and for I cannot get it to play ANY type of FLAC file. It clearly states taht the Patriot can play these files – I have of course updated firmware. I have FLACS from a number of different ripping applications so it would seem implausible that it is a problem with the encoding. I am pretty irritated by this as my music library has been totally converted to FLAC (ripped from CD’s mainly). Can anyone help?
I’ve tried FLAC in 5.1 originally ripped from PCM 5.1
When you choose the option HDMI multi channel it works perfectly! I was able to cut down my lossless from (PCM) 4.79 G to (FLAC) 1.31 G. I did that with Mediacoder and then mux it back with MKV merge.
As for stereo FLAC it as never been an issue to play them at all
